In 2003, a passionate group of residents loving our beautiful coastal region were concerned about its fragility. They banded together and formed Sarasota Conservation Foundation with the intent to protect the exquisite bays, beaches, barrier islands and watersheds that define the character and ecology of Sarasota. The mission to save land forever was imperative as they realized that conservation was a necessity not a luxury. Fueled by their passion for the land and waterways, they worked collaboratively to save lands integral to our way of life.
By 2009, we were conserving lands outside of Sarasota County so we changed our name to Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast to better reflect where we work. In 2010, we received national accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. This designation is a mark of distinction and signifies that Big Waters Land Trusts meets national standards of excellence, upholds the public’s trust and ensures conservation efforts that are permanent. We were reaccredited in 2016, and again in 2021.
Today, we save land throughout the region, not just along the coast, already protecting over 20,000 acres across 60 properties in our five-county service area. After thinking long and hard, we determined it was time for a name that better reflects where we work and why it matters. A name that puts our ‘why’ front and center, while at the same time celebrating what makes Southwest Florida so very special. We are proud to now serve our community as Big Waters Land Trust.
Whether you’re looking to conserve your family lands, safeguard our waters, preserve nature, or make a difference in your community, Big Waters Land Trust is here as your partner in conservation.
