One thing that I find most appealing about living in Florida is that we live in paradise. You’re steps away from nature, the beach, and wide-open spaces of greenery. I find myself taking walks to get my steps at a trail or sitting by a large body of water to ease my mind. It is so peaceful and calm, almost like at the end of a yoga class when the instructor calls you back to the center from a lovely vinyasa flow.
Since moving to the area from New York in 2015, I truly enjoy how much I’ve grown accustomed to being around nature. So much so, that when I visit home, I recall how much I love my city, but realize how much I’ve outgrown the hustle and bustle of its environment. With New York City’s small pockets of outdoor adventures, there always seems to be a need to travel quite a distance to enjoy state parks or large recreational spaces. Again, I love New York, but I love the access we have to nature in this coastal region.
Being part of a phenomenal organization like Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, (CFGC) is truly rewarding. Gearing up for our 20th Anniversary, has brought a lot of exciting opportunities for me to be part of this organizational milestone as Marketing and Events Manager. Our goal to build a better future is genuinely reflected in our impact over the years. Since joining the team to protect nature and save land, I have noticed how much of a personal impact nature has had on my life since living in Florida.
For instance, when I met my husband. At the time, we were just smitten sweethearts, intentionally spending our time out in nature to learn more about one another. We walked trails at Robinson Preserve and Celery Fields; little did I know then that CFGC helped protect these areas, which we thoroughly enjoyed. As fresh darlings admiring the details, we learned about each other while pointing out wildlife that sprinted by and naming the type of birds whose chatter echoed among the trees. It was a way for us to catch up from a day of work and be in the moment. Which was not only peaceful but truly significant – we continue to have nature-immersed wellness checks within our relationship today.
As my husband and I prepare to welcome our son this year, I know we are in a place where he will have access to an abundance of natural resources, thanks in part to what our organization does for the community. I am excited to continue sharing the physical and emotional benefits of time in nature with my family and to continue supporting our work at CFGC.
The emotional appeal of nature as a place for introspective moments and respite is a beautiful thing. I have grown accustomed to calling Florida home, for myself and my family. I have also noticed how much nature is and has been an integral part of my adult life, and am grateful I now get to help protect that which has given me so much!
