Sarasota County Forever Test – Do Not USE

Extend Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands and Parkland Programs

VOTE “YES & YES” FOR LAND CONSERVATION IN SARASOTA COUNTY

Sarasota County’s Land Acquisition and Management Program (LAMP) stands as a proven success in community-driven conservation. First approved by voters in 1999 and reaffirmed in 2005, this initiative reflects a strong public commitment to preserving the region’s natural resources. This fall, Sarasota County residents will once again have the opportunity to vote on extending the program for an additional 20 years.

Funded through a voter-approved tax, LAMP has protected more than 42,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land. These efforts have played a critical role in preserving wildlife habitat, safeguarding water resources, and expanding public access to natural areas. In addition, the program has supported the acquisition of 31 properties that have created or enhanced parks, while improving connections to trails, waterways, and beaches.

The November ballot will include two related measures: one to extend the program, and a second to continue authorizing the use of bonds. Bonding enables the County to act more quickly in securing priority lands as they become available.

A “Yes” vote on both measures supports:

  • The continued protection of wildlife habitat, parklands, and natural areas
  • The preservation of drinking water sources, improved water quality, and reduced flood risk
  • The conservation of sensitive lands to prevent future development

Why it Matters

Our Florida region is experiencing rapid growth. Without continued investment in land conservation, Sarasota County risks losing the natural lands and open spaces that protect water resources, reduce flooding, support wildlife, provide recreational opportunities, and define our overall quality of life.

These lands, whether publicly accessible or not, play a vital role in safeguarding clean water, preserving wildlife habitat, and providing natural flood control. As development accelerates, these benefits become even more essential. At the same time, publicly accessible lands ensure that current and future generations can continue to experience and enjoy the landscapes that make this region unique.

Through these programs, Sarasota County maximizes the impact of taxpayer dollars and accelerates land conservation, delivering results that are transparent, efficient, and meaningful for the community. Looking ahead, it is critical to protect the remaining lands while continuing to expand opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with nature.

This program:

  • Helps slow the pace of development that can negatively impact the quality of life and increase costs for residents.
  • Protects “Old Florida” landscapes, preserving the region’s natural character, wildlife, and ecosystems.
  • Safeguards drinking water quality by preventing runoff and harmful pollutants from entering Sarasota County’s water supply.
  • Conserves forests and wetlands that provide natural flood protection for homes and businesses.
  • Has already protected more than 42,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land, supporting threatened species such as Florida scrub-jays, West Indian manatees, and bald eagles, while expanding connections to trails, waterways, and beaches.

In November 2026, voters will be asked whether to extend funding for the acquisition of parks and preserves. Originally approved by more than 80% of voters in 2005, this program has a strong and proven track record. Extending it will ensure Sarasota County can continue to protect vital lands before they are lost, while also expanding access to parks, trails, and outdoor spaces that strengthen the community’s health, resilience, and economy.

Why it Matters, continued.

Program Successes

These places aren’t just lines or polygons on a map, they are essential to our water quality, wildlife, and overall resilience as a community.

Longino Ranch

One of the most significant conservation projects in Sarasota County, Longino Ranch protects working lands, wildlife corridors, and thousands of acres of critical habitat. The property plays an essential role in natural flood mitigation by retaining rainwater, helping to protect the North Port community. It also supports regional water quality by preserving the natural flow of rainwater into the RV Griffin Reservoir and Myakkahatchee Creek, which contribute to the area’s drinking water supply.

Lemon Bay

This coastal conservation property protects vital shoreline habitat along Lemon Bay, helping to preserve water quality and support marine life. The area includes mangroves, seagrass habitats, and coastal uplands that serve as important nurseries for fish and other wildlife. Protecting Lemon Bay also helps buffer storm impacts, reduce erosion, and maintain the natural character of the coastline while contributing to the overall health of the Gulf ecosystem.

Old Miakka Preserve

Old Miakka Preserve protects a significant expanse of native Florida landscape, including pine flatwoods, wetlands, and open spaces that are critical for wildlife habitat and ecological connectivity. Located in eastern Sarasota County, the preserve helps maintain the rural character of the region while supporting biodiversity and protecting natural water systems. It also offers opportunities for passive recreation, allowing visitors to experience “Old Florida” landscapes firsthand.

Blackburn Point Preserve

Protects a critical shoreline and mangrove ecosystem that helps buffer the Intracoastal Waterway. This preserve also provides valuable public access to the waterfront, an increasingly rare amenity, where visitors can launch boats or kayaks, fish, picnic, and enjoy scenic views.

Tatum Sawgrass Scrub Preserve Addition

In 2021, 228 acres were added to this unique and increasingly rare Florida scrub habitat. This expansion provides more space for public exploration while supporting vital habitat for threatened species, including the Florida scrub-jay.

Legacy Trail Extension

Sarasota County’s network of parks and preserves played a key role in making the Legacy Trail possible. Many segments of the trail connect to or run alongside protected lands, enhancing access to natural areas. Big Waters Land Trust supported this effort through private polling, voter education, advocacy, and community outreach to help advance the successful ballot measure.
