Myakka Island

Why the Northern Myakka River Watershed Matters

The northern Myakka watershed in Manatee County includes irreplaceable ranching and natural lands. Protecting these areas ensures clean water flows into the Myakka River and ultimately the Charlotte Harbor estuary, a critical breeding ground for fish like tarpon, snook, and redfish.

The Gateway to Myakka River State Park

Our 66-acre Upper Myakka Preserve is being restored to reduce invasive plants and enhance the health of the Myakka River before it enters Myakka River State Park. This project promises exciting benefits for wildlife and water quality.

Myakka Island Conservation Corridor

Our Myakka Island Conservation Corridor initiative aims to preserve and protect natural lands along the Myakka River and within its watershed. Conserving and restoring these crucial lands creates a resilient and interconnected landscape that positively impacts the health of both the Myakka River and the broader ecosystem.

Restoring the Flatford Swamp

At our Myakka Headwaters Preserve, we’re improving soil and planting native species to restore wetlands. This work purifies water naturally and combats invasive plants, thanks to partnerships with organizations like the Gulf Coast Community Foundation and CHNEP.
