Embracing Sustainability: The Path to Zero-Waste Events

At Big Waters Land Trust, we’re committed to a future where both the human and natural worlds thrive. One of the ways we are working towards this future is by incorporating eco-friendly principles into our events and everyday operations. Our goal is to eventually become entirely zero-waste. Creating and implementing a zero-waste guide tailored to our specific organizational needs is one of the ways we are working to achieve this. This approach not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also brings numerous benefits to our organization and the community we serve.

As we progress toward the goal of being zero-waste, we thought we would share what we have learned. By implementing strategies like reducing single-use plastics, encouraging recycling and composting, and minimizing overall consumption, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated and sent to landfills. Each small step helps conserve natural resources and reduce pollution, safeguarding our planet for future generations.

As a bonus, ordering less and using compostable foods can lead to cost savings. Contrary to common belief, embracing sustainable practices can be economically beneficial in the long run. Reducing waste means lower disposal costs and potentially fewer purchases of disposable items. Moreover, reusing materials and adopting energy-efficient practices can decrease operational expenses, contributing positively to the organization’s bottom line. Implementing zero-waste principles also demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility, which is in line with our organization’s brand and mission to be a responsible steward of the environment.

Throughout the years, we’ve taken small but significant steps to make our events more sustainable. At our 2024 Community Art Show Opening Reception, from planning to execution, every detail was meticulously designed to minimize environmental impact. In addition to the eco-friendly practices we’ve adopted in recent years, we also worked to make the event as zero-waste as possible. We used biodegradable utensils and compostable plates and cups and served compost-friendly foods like fresh fruit and vegetable platters. We also carefully purchased just the right amount to avoid leftovers at the end of the night.

We are continuing to work toward being a zero-waste organization and efforts go beyond the events we host. Collectively, we are reducing our single-use plastic usage, exploring sustainable sourcing options for materials, and educating our community on the importance of environmental stewardship in all areas.

Adopting eco-friendly practices on the journey to zero-waste is not merely a trend but an essential step towards a sustainable future. These practices benefit not only the environment but also reduce overall costs, enhance organizational efficiency, reputation, and employee satisfaction. As we continue our journey, we invite you to join us in making meaningful contributions to the health of our planet. Together, we can build a brighter, greener future for generations to come!
