The Corkscrew Swamp Focus Area includes the East Corkscrew Swamp and South Corkscrew Swamp sub-watersheds in Collier County. These sub-watersheds are part of a vast wetland system that feeds into the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) and supports the Big Cypress Basin, a critical freshwater resource for Southwest Florida. The area contains extensive cypress swamps, marshes, and wet prairies that provide habitat for iconic species such as the wood stork and Florida panther.
Our Strategic Focus
This focus area has a priority one ranking in the Florida Ecological Greenways Network (FEGN) and Florida Wildlife Corridor and is the only part of our service area designated primary habitat for the Florida panther. This area also contains the greatest concentration of natural carbon storage within our service area.
We limited this Focus Area to the single sub-watershed within the everglades area that is the most at-risk of development. This sub-watershed forms a critical link between Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) preservation area and the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge.
Protecting this Focus Area is vital for panther survival and to protect freshwater flows and support wetland-dependent ecosystems.
